This article emerges as a consequent of a recent book published by its Author. In fact, here we can read the transcription and Portuguese version of a poetical testimonium by Father Manuel Álvares, S. J., offered to his colleague Father Cipriano Soares, printed at the beginning of the first edition of the late’s best-seller handbook of elementary Rhetoric Ars rhetorica libri tres, Coimbra, 1562. In addition, and besides some notes intended to provide historical and cultural background, two more Latin texts and vernacular translations are also offered: twelve elegiac doublets, by Father Miguel Venegas, which were published at the same place and stand as a pendant of Álvares poem; and the introduction written by Álvares to his selection and expurgatory edition of Martial epigrams, book first published in 1569 and intended to provide a text-book to Latin classes at Jesuit schools all over the world.
