Basic concepts concerning Environmental Education were explore in order to spread knowledge about the environment, its preservation and sustainability. It is a permanent and intensive learning process, so we expect those involved become aware of their surroundings and acquire new insights and skills to act when the need of finding solutions for environmental problems arises. We used the action research, the qualitative method, the participant observation technique in the school, and semi-structured interviews with a questionnaire applied to the biology teacher and students. Given the observations and responses from the interviewees, we realized the need for developing interdisciplinary activities to encourage teachers, students and the community as a whole to stand up for environmental protection. Those lessons appear to be highly valuable, since the students in question are of indigenous origin, and traditionally have nature as a sacred unit to be preserved. The interdisciplinary activities developed were supported by the Municipal Secretariat of the Environment (Secretaria Municipal de Meio Ambiente), proving to be an excellent strategy for the teaching-learning process of environmental contents. Therefore, the students were not only told about the importance of teaching Environmental Education, but also incentivized to retrieve values of environmental care, based on theoric content. This study sought to raise awareness about the value of Environmental Education, as well as encourage critical thinking about the preservation of the environment, having junior high school students from the Umariaçú II community as its main target.
