Item Prevalência da síndrome das pernas inquietas em população de idosos universitários da cidade de Manaus (UEA-UNATI)(Universidade do Estado do Amazonas, 2019-01-18) Almeida, Carlos Maurício Oliveira de; Oliveira, Fernanda Paz de; Farias, Stephanie Ramos de; Fernandes, Eduardo; Ribeiro, Euler Esteves; Coletta, Marcus Vinicius DellaRestless legs syndrome (RLS) is a disorder of sensor motor integration, which affects approximately 5 to 10% of the population. Studies in certain population groups, especially in healthy elderly in the north of the country, are still scarce. To determine the prevalence of RLS; to assess the severity of symptoms through the RLSRS; to check for the presence of sleepiness and sleep complaints. This was an observational, cross-sectional study. Participants were interviewed with a questionnaire created on basis of the RLSRS criteria. Analyses were performed using MINITAB version 14.1. 82 elderly people were interviewed. The mean age was 69 years (± 4.18 years), with 81.8% female and 18.2% male, with a female to male ratio of 4.5:1. The prevalence of RLS in this population was 13.4% (N=11). Among the affected, 62.3% had moderate RLS symptoms and 37.5% had mild degree. The average RLSRS score was 11.5 points (± 6.62) and none showed scores above 20 (severe/very severe). Sleep disorders (SD) were present in 50% of the participants, which were graded as Light (25%), Moderate (12.5%) and Intense (12.5%). There was no evidence of association between age and the degree of RLS (p = 0.71), nor between gender and the severity of symptoms (p = 0.37). RLS is a highly prevalent condition and still under-diagnosed and treated in the elderly population of the Amazon region. Keywords: Restless legs; elderly; Amazon; University.
