Resumo
The present article "To be a teacher in contemporary times: positive and negative aspects in the choice of the teaching career", had as a general objective to analyze the positive and negative aspects in the choice of the teaching career. This research sought to answer questions concerning the aspects that involve this profession and also to find out if the teacher education prepares them, in fact, to act in the contemporary reality, as well as to show what it is to be a teacher in the society of knowledge, information, and new technologies, to identify the reasons why the teaching career is chosen by many individuals, and to list the positive and negative aspects of the current teaching profession. This study was based on the authors: Bacich (2015), Drucker (1997), Nóvoa (1997), Silva (2010), Gil (1946), Figueiredo (2008) Lakatos (2010) and Prodanov and Freitas (2013), among others. Its approach was qualitative, through literature analysis and field research, the subjects investigated were five teachers from state schools and five from municipal schools, totaling ten teachers, five men and five women. For data collection in the field, we used a questionnaire with four questions, three open questions and one closed question, i.e., mixed questions, for teachers of two schools, one municipal and one state school in the city of Tefé - AM. The results of the research obtained from the analysis and interpretation of the data collected in dialogue with the researched authors confirmed that the positive aspects that lead teachers to follow this career are how to form critical citizens, recognition for the work they develop, they can overcome adversity and be part of the educational development of new professionals. And the negative aspects found are: work overload, lack of interest from the students, low pay, the devaluation of the profession, and the lack of teaching materials and space.
