Resumo
This research aims to analyze versions of the mythology of the Amazons in
antiquity and in chronicles written by explorers of the river that later became known as the
Amazonas. Thus, the main objective of the research is to identify similarities between the
narrative of Francisco de Orellana's expedition, described in the work Descobrimento do rio
das Amazonas, with the works of antiquity. This discussion is also the product of a
bibliographical research based on reading published articles, books that address the theme and
dissertations in which each version of the authors is a guarantee of the essence of this
mythology. Furthermore, the research is subdivided into three divisions. The first one is
dedicated to a study of the amazons, based on the works of André Thévet (1979) and Matos
(1998), among others. The second part is dedicated to the presentation of the Amazons in the
Argonautica by Apolônio de Rhodes (RODRIGUES JR, 2021). In the third part, we present
the Amazons in the narrative of the chroniclers of Francisco de Orellana's expedition, in
which they are described as a tribe of warrior women discovered by the Spanish who were
fundamental for naming the largest river in the world.
