Resumo

The objective of this study is to gather the main findings on the profile of women in the context of the penitentiary system, the consequences triggered by incarceration in relation to health care within the prison system, in addition to bringing a reflection on the state and female incarceration and the viability of maintaining house arrest for this population. Method: Integrative Literature Review (ILR) study, which aims to synthesize studies obtained through searches in reliable databases, which occur in a systematic and orderly manner. This review was prepared based on the 6 phases of the review. The construction of the guiding question and the search terms were defined based on the PICo strategy. Results: 12 scientific articles published between 2018 and 2022 were included in the integrative review, the journals and study locations varied between the South, Northeast and Southwest regions. The themes of the studies involved the profiles of incarcerated women found in the prison system, the unhealthiness of the institutions and the fragility of health care within the system, and reflections on the state and female incarceration. Conclusion: This review showed that the state is referred to as the guardian, that is, the official person responsible for women in prison. The predominant profile of women found in prison was that of young women, single mothers, black women, homemakers, and low-income women. These women are stigmatized, labeled, and have no autonomy in the face of the prison system, which ends up making their rights described by law unfeasible, which causes these women, pregnant women, and mothers to live in an inhospitable environment permeated by violence against themselves and their children still in the womb.
