Resumo
In the Brazilian Amazon, there are regional vessels that tend to move fast and are subject to
operational challenges such as instabilities and interactions with waves that may occur
occasionally. However, in order to contribute to the development of safer high-speed regional
vessels, it is still necessary to know more about the existing vessels and study their
hydrodynamic behavior. In this context, this work aims to describe some of the most common
fast regional vessels in the State of Amazonas, considering the city of Parintins as the study site,
and to evaluate the dynamics of a regional vessel during its interaction with regular waves. To
carry out the first part of the study, a survey of representative regional vessels was carried out.
Therefore, a longitudinal expresso-type passenger transport vessel, which usually sails on the
Manaus – Parintins route, was considered in order to evaluate its response under various regular
wave conditions using the Ansys Aqwa® software. The vessel's movements were researched in
the frequency and time domains, using the Hydrodynamic Diffraction and Hydrodynamic
Response modules, respectively. Comparative analyses were performed to evaluate the effects
of different wave incidence angles on the resulting heave, roll and pitch motions of the vessel.
The frequency domain analysis allowed finding the motion resonance conditions of the vessel
floating freely. On the other hand, the results obtained in the time domain allowed
demonstrating the use of the software to simulate, in a simplified manner, the temporal
evolution of the displacements, velocities and accelerations of the vessel, for some operating
conditions with forward speed. Considering the simplifications made in the potential flow
theory as well as the need to validate the time domain approach, this work can serve as an
example to extend the use of the Ansys Aqwa® software in the study of other regional vessels..
