“Estudo introdutório à retórica de áquila romano seguido de tradução dos Διανοίας Σχήματα do livro de Figuris Senten tiarum et Elocutionis ”

Abstract

This work aims to investigate the rhetorical tradition from its origins in Classical Antiquity to its consolidation in the Roman World, with the purpose of contextualizing the work De figuris sententiarum et elocutionis by Aquila Romanus, a Latin rhetorician from the 3rd century D.C. The research will include an unpublished translation, from Latin to Portuguese, of the διανοίας σχήματα present in the work. To contextualize the work, we will first outline the historical development of rhetoric in Classical Antiquity; next, we will present the main characteristics of the rhetorical system, with an emphasis on elocutio and the development of figures of speech; finally, we will introduce the rhetorician Aquila Romanus and we analyze four figures of thought extracted from his work, which belong to a subgroup termed figurae per detractionem.
