The study aims to analyze the images of black people in the researched
textbooks of elementary and high school in the light of Law 10.639/2003 that
made Afro-Brazilian history and culture compulsory. In the first moment we
present a theoretical study about the beginning of the coming of blacks to
Brazil, period of slavery. In the second moment a brief account of the struggles
of social movements for the creation of the Law that correctly recognizes and
values the black culture. In the third moment there is an account of the textbook
in Brazil and how the image of black people is represented in a negative way,
most of the time, in this very important vehicle of information, ending with the
bleaching policy that idealizes the color and culture of ruling class thus
excluding black culture and people, thus emphasizing the formation of social
and cultural thinking of Brazilian society. To conclude, the field research where
is an analysis of black images in textbooks in an attempt to understand if after
the Law that requires the correct study of Afro studies, this image is still
‘illustrated in a subaltern way, which continues the formation of prejudiced
thinking about blacks in Brazil.
