Resumo
The master's thesis presented to the PPGDA/UEA is in the line of research Conservation
of Natural Resources and Sustainable Development; Objectives: the study investigates
the difficulty (s) of Non-Formal Environmental Education after the intervention of socio-
environmental programs by the Public Power in the peripheral neighborhoods of the city
of Manaus/AM. It considers the historical and legal trajectory for the meaning of
Environmental Education in the Non-Formal modality, the objectives, the principles in
the context marked by the permanent degradation of the environment and the peripheral
populations. In this perspective, the study presents the problem of environmental
degradation in poor/peripheral regions of the city of Manaus/AM resulting from the lack
or little non-formal education generated by disorderly occupation and urban segregation.
Methods: This is a deductive study, based on an exploratory study, with support from
international, national and local legislation, a bibliographic survey and documentary
analysis; in terms of objectives, it proposes a qualitative approach that allows the
complexity of a given hypothesis or problem to be described. The general objective is to
identify the difficulties of non-formal environmental education for the peripheral
populations affected by the Social and Environmental Program for the Igarapés of
Manaus (PROSAMIM I). The dissertation was constructed in 03 distinct chapters, in
which each specific objective was dealt with, except for the last one, which was included
in the third chapter as a subsection after guidance from the qualification board. Results:
From the research, it was possible to identify that there are strategies in Non-Formal
Environmental Education that can be improved, integrated and expanded to the entire
population, given the demographic numbers and territorial extension and the
prioritization of environmental issues on the economic, political and social agenda.
Conclusions: environmental education in Manaus/AM, especially in the context of
PROSAMIM, should be seen as a strategic tool not only to mitigate environmental
impacts, but also to encourage the active participation of the population in solutions to
urban and environmental problems. Despite the progress made, there are still significant
challenges to be overcome, such as the continuity of actions over the long term, expanding
the scope of the program and overcoming socio-economic issues.
