Resumo
Traditional knowledge is characterized by the knowledge historically constructed by communities living in the Amazon. This knowledge is transmitted between generations and includes sustainable practices such as the responsible use of natural resources, cultivation in raised beds, land and fishing management, waste reuse, and respect for the rhythm of nature. When incorporated into the school curriculum, this knowledge strengthens the cultural identity of students, along with environmental education, which promotes critical awareness, belonging, and student protagonism in building sustainable practices in their own community. The purpose of this work was to understand how traditional knowledge can contribute to environmental education developed at the São José Operário Municipal School located in Paraná do Limão do Meio in the municipality of Parintins. Given this proposal, qualitative analyses, based on phenomenology, were used to understand behaviors and opinions in order to obtain the research data. Emphasis is given to observations made on-site, such as the survey of traditional knowledge regarding the disposal of waste produced in the community, identifying how traditional knowledge is used as a motivating agent for environmental education at the school, and finally evaluating the effectiveness of a pedagogical workshop on composting carried out with the students. The results indicate that it is noticeable that by learning to transform waste into fertilizer, the students understood, in practice, that what was previously seen as garbage can return to nature in a useful way, strengthening the idea of sustainability, thus opening a space where ancestral knowledge and modern sustainable practices meet
