Abstract: This article aims to compare the Letter of Pero Vaz Caminha to the King of Portugal D. Manuel I with two paintings done, respectively, by the painters Oscar Pereira da Silva Silva (Desembarque de Pedro Álvares Cabral) and Victor Meirelles (A Primeira Missa no Brasil). The aim is to observe how the plastic arts of these canonical painters translate the written document by electing two historical moments in visual terms and how they represent the figure of the Portuguese and the Indians based on the concepts of intersemiotic translation, intertextuality and dialogism.
