This paper presents a case study of the secondary protection system, which is currently
installed within the 13.8 kV substation of UEA-REITORIA, using concepts of microprocessed
secondary protection systems. The main tool used was the microprocessor-based relay UPER
6104, which can be programmed using previously calculated parameters, thus establishing
limits and requirements for the full operation of energy in accordance with the concessionaire's
rules and also protection through sectioning in cases of failures. Annual energy bill data was
applied to survey the demanded power consumed by the establishment today (kWh) and the
power study project of the UEA-REITORIA substation, to obtain the short circuit values of the
concessionaire offered in that establishment point. In addition, through a calculation report, new
parameters were obtained for the programming of the UPER 6104 relay, just comparing the
new data obtained with those already installed inside the substation for a technical analysis as
to its current performance and whether it still meets protection requirements.
