Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the woodworking behaviors in the municipality of Parintins, focusing on their commitment to sustainability and adaptation to the environment. The specific objectives were to identify methods of wood extraction and processing, understand the characteristics of the timber industry chain, and analyze the compliance of these practices with environmental regulations. The methodology followed qualitative approaches: interviews and questionnaires were conducted with the owners of timber industries and companies emphasizing sustainability. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis techniques, which involved storing information about production practices, waste management, and environmental impacts. The results indicated that woodworking companies face challenges related to access to modern materials, inadequate waste management, lack of proper storage areas, and insufficient professional qualification. Given these issues, they rely on the Brazilian government to mitigate the setbacks caused by their insufficient infrastructure for implementing sustainable practices, which compromises their competitiveness, reputation, and positive environmental impact. Despite these challenges, the sector holds potential for development through the adoption of environmental certifications and advanced technologies. It was concluded that public policies promoting technological modernization, offering credit lines, providing professional training programs, and reinforcing adherence to environmental regulations are essential for boosting the woodworking sector. Such measures would contribute to job creation, income generation, and sustainable development in Parintins.
