Resumo

The Amazonas is one of the five states in the country with the highest maternal mortality rates, representing a major challenge for Primary Health Care. It is at this level of care that pregnant women ideally first interact with the Unified Health System, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive and humanized health care, including care and follow-up by dental health teams. This study aims to investigate dental prenatal care at the Basic Health Unit Lúcio Flávio de Vasconcelos Dias and Family Health Unit 421, municipality of Manaus, AM. It is an observational, exploratory, cross-sectional study with both quantitative and qualitative aspects, involving women who completed prenatal care in 2022 with health teams at the Health Unit. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire with 38 objective questions and a semi-structured instrument with two open-ended questions. The objective questions were analyzed descriptively, and the open-ended questions were analyzed using Bardin’s Content Analysis. The study included 23.80% of the 134 women who completed prenatal care at the Health Unit, with 43.75% of participants aged 18 to 29, 75% having completed high school, 56.25% identifying as single, and 46.88% self-reported as homemakers. It was found that 53.12% of participants started prenatal care in the second month of pregnancy, and regarding dental prenatal care, 78.12% of participants reported having had only one dental consultation. There was no quarterly dental consultation for 100% of the participants, and 96.88% reported not receiving guidance on oral diseases and pregnancy-related issues; 93.75% indicated needing dental treatment at the beginning of dental prenatal care, and the same percentage reported that this need was not met. From the analysis of the open-ended questions, four categories emerged: quality of dental prenatal care; understanding of the importance of dental prenatal care; relationship with the dental health team; and satisfaction with the prenatal service provided. Dissatisfaction was observed regarding the care and guidance received by women, a lack of understanding of the information provided, and a lack of connection with the professionals. Based on these results, a mobile application prototype was developed as a tool to enhance pregnant women’s access to dental prenatal care, aiming to improve access and adherence to dental consultations during pregnancy and address doubts and beliefs about dental treatment during this period
