Resumo

The composite resin is a widely used material in dentistry, with indication for use in direct aesthetic-functional restorations, so it is essential to assess whether excessive consumption of acidic beverages can interfere with its chemical properties. The present study evaluated the effect of energy drinks on the chemical elements silicon, zirconium and calcium of a composite resin. The composite resin Filtek Z350 XT - 3M / ESPE was used in the A3E color, where 36 specimens of 6.0mm diameter and 1.5mm thickness were made. The specimens were initially immersed in distilled water for 24 hours at 37ºC and then divided into two groups (n = 18), according to the immersion times: 1 month (T1) and 3 months (T2), and in subgroups (n = 6) for the immersion solutions: control group (distilled water) and two energy drinks (Redbull and Monster). The inorganic composition was analyzed in the periods of T0, T1 and T2. Measurement of the inorganic composition was given by means of the X-ray fluorescence apparatus (Supermini Rigaku). The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA / Tukey, for comparison between months and immersion solutions. The results obtained identified zirconium, silicon and calcium as the main components of this resin. The concentration of these particles was influenced by exposure to energy drinks. Redbull was the most influential solution, promoting losses of the Si mineral after 1 month of immersion and, after 3 months, Zr losses. In addition, Calcium also suffered losses for this beverage, both after 1 month and after 3 months. Monster, although pH similar to Redbull, influenced losses only for the element Si, after 1 month of immersion. Distilled water did not induce significant losses in any of the elements. The time factor did not influence the alterations so much, as some losses occurred in the first month and remained stable, while others occurred only in the third month
