Abstract

This research aims to analyze how semantic ambiguities are addressed in the compositions of the Brazilian band Legião Urbana, highlighting them as a structuring element of its poetic language. The choice of this topic stems from a personal admiration for the band's work and from the relevance of its lyrics within the Brazilian musical and literary scene, especially due to the complexity of social, political, and existential themes. The study is based on the assumption that such ambiguities are not merely stylistic, but rather function as expressive and critical devices that expand the interpretative potential of the songs. The general objective of this research is to examine how these ambiguities manifest in the band's lyrics from a semantic perspective, while the specific objectives include identifying ambiguous songs, show the effects of these ambiguities on the interpretation and reception of songs by listeners. The research is guided by key questions that explore the intentionality and effects of ambiguity in the compositions, considering it a signature trait of Renato Russo's authorship. The theoretical framework includes authors such as Saussure (2006), Ilari and Geraldi (2006), Bakhtin (2003), Santaella (1983; 2001), Jauss (1994) and Iser (1996). Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative approach, using textual analysis of selected songs and the application of questionnaires in a remote focus group.
