Resumo
The research entitled “Challenges and Possibilities of Teaching Afro-Brazilian History and Culture in a State School in the District of Caburi/Am” is presented as a contribution to the discussions on the issue of Law No. 10.639/03, which made the teaching of African History and Afro-Brazilian Culture mandatory in public schools. The theme becomes comprehensive as it understands the need to understand the applicability of the aforementioned Law in the school context, in order to know how this approach is carried out and its importance for the appreciation of culture and respect for diversity. This research uses the qualitative approach in which it presents fundamental characteristics that will help us navigate different research contexts. The study was developed in a state public school in the District of Caburi, located 45 km in a straight line from the city of Parintins, State of Amazonas. The research subjects were 04 (four) History teachers and 1 (one) pedagogical coordinator of the school. The technique of participatory observation and the application of a structured interview were used to collect and analyze the data. The results show the relevance of this study in understanding how current educators and students view this topic, given that it was not part of their initial education or was addressed in a stereotypical manner. Therefore, it is essential to include this topic in schools in rural Amazonian communities, since it has become one of the essential elements in rebuilding the path that has built a negative image of African people. From there, we can deconstruct discriminatory and prejudiced ideologies and mentalities that permeate contemporary society.
