Narrativas, conflitos e debates sobre a implantação da mineradora ALCOA em Juruti-PA

Abstract

This article analyzes the implementation process of the mining company ALCOA in the municipality of Juruti/PA. The time frame of the research is delimited between the years 1980 to 2015. We dialogued with researchers such as Luca (2008), Figueiredo (1997), Bittencourt (2014) among others. We used as sources newspapers available in digital files and also oral narratives. The digital archives surveyed were the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira, which used the periodicals Jornal Do Commercio-AM and Jornal do Commercio-RJ; as well as the Documental Archive Dom Tomás Balduíno, created by the Pastoral Commission for Land-CPT. It was evident in the periodicals that since the 1980s, mining companies were already studying the bauxite deposits in the region of the Lower Amazon of Pará. In the press, the US company's billionaire investments were reported. The comparison between the press and the oral source allowed us to perceive the contradictions between what was advertised as a “benefit” for the region and the impact that mining generated both in rural communities and in the urban area of Juruti.
