As novelas brasileiras e a representação do nordeste: construção, perpetuação de estereótipos e a influência nas percepções sociais

Abstract

Brazilian soap operas play a central role in the construction and dissemination of cultural and regional representations, significantly influencing social perceptions of different parts of the country. In the case of the Northeast, the recurrence of linguistic and visual stereotypes in television productions has contributed to consolidating a limited view of the region, often associated with rusticity, simplicity, and backwardness. This study investigates how the soap operas Gabriela, Velho Chico, Mar do Sertão, and No Rancho Fundo construct and perpetuate stereotypes about the Northeast, with special attention to the linguistic features attributed to northeastern characters and their implications for social perception. The research was conducted through a bibliographic review, using books, scientific articles, and online materials to analyze the representations of the Northeast in soap operas. The study follows a qualitative and exploratory approach, seeking to understand how language, setting, and narrative archetypes contribute to constructing a northeastern identity in Brazilian television drama. The results show that the analyzed soap operas tend to reinforce a traditional imaginary about the Northeast, emphasizing aspects such as drought, the backlands, and ways of life linked to simplicity and resilience. These productions often portray northeastern characters in an exoticized manner, where linguistic variations are presented in a caricatured way, reducing the diversity of northeastern speech to a limited set of expressions and marked phonetic traits. This linguistic portrayal contributes to the crystallization of social stigmas, reinforcing the perception that the accent and variations of Portuguese spoken in the region are associated with a lack of education or social inferiority. Moreover, the setting and plots on these soap operas reinforce a romanticized vision of the Northeast, often ignoring its cultural and economic plurality. Although some productions highlight elements that value local culture, such as music, cuisine, and folklore, there is still a tendency to frame the Northeast from a limited perspective, which can impact how northeasterners see themselves and are perceived by the rest of the country. Given these findings, the study highlights the need for a more authentic and plural representation of the Northeast in Brazilian television drama. Overcoming stereotypes depends on the media’s commitment to portraying the region’s diversity more accurately, incorporating characters and stories that reflect the social, economic, and cultural complexity of contemporary Northeast Brazil. Finally, this study suggests that future research should further explore audience reception of these representations and examine how new productions are addressing this issue. Valuing linguistic and cultural diversity on television can play a crucial role in deconstructing prejudices and promoting a fairer and more balanced view of the Northeast and its population.
