Resumo

This study aimed to analyze the incidence of premature newborns in a public maternity hospital in Manaus in 2023. This is a quantitative, epidemiological, observational, and retrospective study using documentation techniques. Data collection was carried out following approval by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP/UEA), opinion number 7.576.466, and the study population consisted of all newborns delivered in 2023. The collected data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and organized into the following categories: I – Neonatal Deaths Among Preterm Infants; II – Maternal Profile; III – Newborn Profile. The results showed that in the study year, there were 3,128 live births, of which 434 (14%) were premature. Among these preterm infants, 22 died (5%), and 17 of them had a birth weight below 1,000 g. Regarding the maternal profile, 39% were between 26 and 35 years old, 70% were single, 58% had completed high school, 83% were from Manaus, and 43% attended more than seven prenatal consultations. It was concluded that in 2023 there was a significant number of preterm births, and neonatal mortality was strongly associated with gestational ages ≤ 28 weeks and birth weights < 1,000 g. Additionally, there is a need to investigate preterm cases with excessive weight gain for gestational age due to the associated risks of complications, although such occurrences are not frequently reported in the literature.
