Literatura como um ato de resistência: crítica social e política na obra de Márcio Souza

Abstract

This study analyzes the social and political critique present in Márcio Souza’s works Galvez, Imperador do Acre and Mad Maria. Based on a bibliographic research approach, to understand how the author employs irony, critical reinterpretations of historical events, and the denunciation of violence associated with modernization projects to highlight the contradictions that shape the formation of the Amazon region. In Galvez, the narrative exposes the political farce surrounding the dispute over Acre, revealing colonial practices and foreign interests. In Mad Maria, the novel portrays the construction of the Madeira-Mamoré Railway, emphasizing the dehumanization of workers and the environmental impacts of the project. By articulating literary and historical elements, the study demonstrates that Márcio Souza’s work functions as an instrument of symbolic resistance and critique of the forms of exploitation that structure the region, reaffirming the importance of literature in understanding the social and cultural tensions of the Amazon.
