Resumo
Dental prostheses, whether partial, total, fixed or removable, are intended to replace lost dental elements for the most diverse reasons (carious process, periodontal disease, dental trauma, etc.), restoring chewing, swallowing, phonation considerable improvements in aesthetics, positively affecting self-esteem and quality of life. When it comes to patients with maxilla or mandible fully edentulous, conventional total prostheses are the most commonly used as rehabilitation treatment. In some cases, however, the conventional total prosthesis is inadequate levels of retention and stability, mandibular prostheses, leaving the patient dissatisfied. The aim of this work was to report a clinical case of oral rehabilitation with Overdenture prosthesis, taking advantage of the roots of the dental elements of the mandible to retain and stabilize it, as a treatment option for patients who have undergone radiotherapy. Patient AMV, male gender, 69, attended the UEA Specialties Center to make upper and lower prostheses after undergoing oncologic treatment. The definitive treatment plan of this patient consisted in the elaboration of a mandibular overdenture supported on roots after the endodontic treatment of the remaining elements. In this case, the combination of endodontic treatment and restoration of roots with ionomer, followed by confection and installation of a total prosthesis on the roots of these elements proved to be effective in both functional and psychological aspects, since the patient did not he had to deal with tooth loss and root maintenance provided retention and stability so he could use the prosthesis properly.
