To analyze the scientific evidence on the contributions of the birth plan to obstetric care. Method: This is an integrative review, which used controlled descriptors: prenatal care, obstetric nursing and humanized delivery in Portuguese and Prenatal care, Obstetric Nursing, Humanizing Delivery in MeSH. Results: 10 scientific articles were included, six (60%) from LILACS and four (40%) from Medline, of which nine (90%) were published in Portuguese and one (10%) in English; showed a shortage of scientific production at the national and international level, with emphasis on the low production in the North region, which is represented by a publication in the state of Pará. From the data, three categories were elaborated, the birth plan as a birth plan as an education instrument; the birth plan as an empowerment tool; and the birth plan as a mechanism to reduce obstetric violence. Conclusion: The study showed the birth plan as a great and important ally in obstetric care, providing great benefits to maternal and neonatal health, avoiding unfavorable outcomes. However, more investment and commitment from service professionals are needed, both for the elaboration of the birth plan and for the fulfillment of the wishes expressed therein
