Resumo
This article owes its genesis to the interest in Grammar as a discipline essential
for the linguistic studies that have subsequently emerged and developed. As a basis
the analysis we will use the translation of two grammatical works by two authors who had enormous notoriety in the
notoriety in the grammatical field in the ancient period. Specifically, the present work has
as the object of study the definition of the parts of speech, as they are presented to us,
both in the Greek grammar of Dionysius the Thracian (170 B.C. - 90 B.C.) and in the Latin grammar of Elio Donato (320 B.C.).
of Elio Donato (320 - 380 AD). The aim is to compare these definitions,
and show what they have in common and in opposition, since from them come the ten classes of words
of words that the Portuguese grammar currently presents.
Key-words: Grammar; Dionysius the Thracian; Donatus; Word classes
