Abstract

This article aims to analyze the exceptional floods in the city of Parintins-AM that occurred in 2009-2022 and thus verify the environmental consequences for its urban population. The methodology used consists of observational and comparative methods. And as a source of data research on institutional sites such as IBGE, ANA, INMET, CPRM). The highest frequencies of exceptional floods occurred in the period between 2009-2022. Problems such as water pollution, fires and increasingly frequent deforestation are harming the quality of life of man and various species, the lack of drainage, factors pointed out in the municipal infrastructure of the municipality, such as the type of asphalt, garbage in culverts, errors in projects and especially disordered urban occupations as well. Therefore, it is observed that the Amazon River in its annual cycle of floods and ebbs presents, in the last decades, an intensity of the level of its floods, occurring more frequently above the quota of 29 meters. Parintins during the floods has part of the city submerged by the water of the river, the floods in the neighborhoods of Parintins causing damage to traders and residents in several areas of the municipality. Social problems in the months of floods cause damage to land transport, flooded streets, people who live in low-lying areas need to adapt their housing, lack of drinking water, accumulation of garbage, venomous animals in homes, construction of bridges is necessary, children do not attend schools due to the flooding of public roads, social inequality is evident and the peripheral neighborhoods of the municipality are the most affected during this period of flooding.
