Rotas da degradação: mapeamento histórico e socioambiental dos lixões municipais da cidade de Parintins / AM entre os anos de 1990 ao século XXI

Abstract

The article “Degradation Routes: Historical and Socio-environmental Mapping of Municipal Dumps in the City of Parintins / AM between the 1990s and the 21st Century” analyzes the degradation routes left by small clandestine garbage dumps until they became the municipal “controlled landfill” of Parintins/AM. Mapping the areas through which it passed, in addition to identifying the social and environmental impacts that were caused by this entire process. The results of this discussion show that the city of Parintins underwent a series of urban and ecological transformations throughout the implementation of dumps in various places in the city, affecting human life and the environment, especially when the current dump was implemented in the Djard Vieira neighborhood. The municipal administration gave it the name Controlled Landfill, however, the treatment process qualifies it as a dump. This actually contaminates lakes and the water table that are located beneath the site. The research found that even decades after its emergence, the problem related to the garbage dump in Parintins is still present in the lives of the people, who suffer from bad smells, diseases, rodent infestations, and flies. For this, the newspaper Novo Horizonte, belonging to the Alvorada de Comunicação radio station in the city of Parintins, was used, which denounced the problems related to the garbage dump from 1994 to 2006. These results indicate that garbage dumps represent serious sources of environmental and ecological contamination, moreover, because the city center is a set of islets intersected by the Amazon River.
