This dissertation presents the important role of river transport and port infrastructure in the
State of Amazonas, Brazil from the perspective of Environmental Law. The natural
characteristics of the Amazon region influence the natural vocation for the use of river
transport on a larger scale than the others. The existence or not of means of locomotion by the
rivers of the Amazon region, the seaworthiness of them, the economically valuable forest
products (wood, rubber, minerals, fish, hunting), are important factors that determine the
degree of economic development Most cities in the state of Amazonas. Since the start of
actual occupation by the Portuguese in the seventeenth century, inland-waterway has always
been highlighted as a major means of production and people displacement, remaining today as
the most important means of transport in the region. Therefore, this work demonstrates the
importance of river transport to determine the degree of ease / difficulty of transportation and
communication between people, access to consumer goods as trade is conducted by vessels in
most cases, access to energy power by biodiesel, access to education and justice, and finally
the relationship between this means of transport and port activity as a means of ensuring
sustainable economic development - while respecting the natural characteristics of the region
and with observation and concern the exercise of fundamental freedoms as the right to come
and with dignity.and security in this means of transportaion.
