dc.description.abstractOral mucositis is one of the most frequent and debilitating complications in patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy, characterized by intense pain, ulcerative lesions and significant functional impairment, especially regarding nutrition and overall quality of life. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has emerged as a relevant therapeutic approach for the prevention and management of this condition due to its ability to modulate inflammatory processes, stimulate tissue repair and promote progressive clinical improvement. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of photobiomodulation in the treatment of oral mucositis through a series of three clinical cases in which oncologic patients developed mucositis at different severity levels during antineoplastic therapy. The methodology consisted of an individual assessment of each patient, including clinical documentation, mucositis grading and application of PBM according to the protocol used by the service, followed by monitoring of lesion evolution and symptom response. The results demonstrated that all patients experienced significant improvement after beginning PBM, with measurable reduction in pain, decreased extent of ulcerations, stabilization of the clinical picture and regression of mucositis severity, even in cases where treatment was initiated at later stages. Photobiomodulation directly contributed to the maintenance of oral feeding, increased comfort during therapy and improved tolerance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions, reducing the risk of treatment interruptions. Early initiation of PBM showed even more favorable outcomes, reinforcing its preventive potential. These findings align with current scientific literature, which recognizes PBM as a safe, non-invasive, low-cost and widely applicable therapeutic resource in the supportive care of cancer patients. This case series also highlights the essential role of dental surgeons within the multidisciplinary oncologic team, demonstrating that evidence-based interventions can positively influence clinical outcomes and enhance patients’ quality of life. Thus, photobiomodulation proves to be a highly effective tool for the management of oral mucositis, contributing to symptom relief, optimization of supportive care and continuity of oncologic treatment.
dc.description.resumoA mucosite oral é uma das complicações mais frequentes e debilitantes em pacientes submetidos à quimiorradioterapia, caracterizando-se por dor intensa, ulcerações e impacto funcional significativo, especialmente na alimentação e na qualidade de vida. A fotobiomodulação (PBM) surge como uma estratégia terapêutica relevante para prevenção e manejo dessa condição, devido à sua capacidade de modular processos inflamatórios, estimular regeneração tecidual e promover melhora clínica progressiva. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a efetividade da fotobiomodulação no tratamento da mucosite oral por meio de uma série de três casos clínicos, nos quais pacientes em tratamento oncológico evoluíram com mucosite em diferentes graus. A metodologia consistiu na avaliação individual de cada paciente, incluindo documentação clínica, classificação da mucosite e aplicação de PBM conforme o protocolo adotado pelo serviço, seguida do acompanhamento da evolução das lesões e dos sintomas. Os resultados evidenciaram que todos os pacientes apresentaram melhora significativa após o início da PBM, com redução mensurável da dor, diminuição da extensão das ulcerações, estabilização do quadro clínico e regressão dos graus de mucosite, mesmo nos casos em que o tratamento foi iniciado tardiamente. A fotobiomodulação contribuiu diretamente para a manutenção da via oral como via de alimentação, maior conforto durante o tratamento e melhor tolerância às sessões de quimioterapia e radioterapia, reduzindo o risco de interrupções terapêuticas. Observou-se também que o início precoce da PBM mostrou evolução ainda mais favorável, reforçando o potencial preventivo da técnica. Esses achados são compatíveis com a literatura atual, que reconhece a PBM como recurso seguro, não invasivo, de baixo custo e com ampla aplicabilidade clínica no suporte ao paciente oncológico. A presente série de casos destaca a importância da atuação do cirurgião-dentista no contexto multidisciplinar, demonstrando que intervenções adequadas e baseadas em evidências podem alterar positivamente o curso clínico de pacientes em tratamento antineoplásico. Assim, conclui-se que a fotobiomodulação apresenta elevada efetividade no manejo da mucosite oral, configurando-se como ferramenta indispensável para promover alívio dos sintomas, otimizar a qualidade de vida e favorecer a continuidade do tratamento oncológico.
