Resumo
From the 1950s, education began to play a more relevant role in the currents of
economic thought. The theory of human capital began to treat it as a means to increase
productivity and, consequently, income. In this way, a skilled society would be able to
generate higher levels of production and income. Based on this logic, several
governments began to allocate more resources in this sector to promote long-term
sustainable economic growth. In this sense, the present article aims to analyze the
effect of public spending on education on the per capita income level in Brazil for the
period from 2005 to 2014. For this, an econometric panel data model was estimated,
considering the per capita income level as a function of the variables: public
educational expenditures, education level and unemployment rate. The results indicate
a positive relationship between the main variables.
