Resumo
The purpose of this monograph was to investigate how the process of identity reaffirmation of
the residents of the community of São Francisco do Rio Bauana is taking place as quilombola
remnants, in the municipality of Alvarães - Amazonas in the Middle Solimões. For this, we
used the qualitative method, bibliographic review, document analysis and oral interviews with
residents of the Community of São Francisco do Bauana. We used as main theorists Patrícia
Sampaio, Patrícia Alves-Melo, Arthur César Reis, Emmanuel de Almeida Farias Júnior, Júlio
Cláudio da Silva and Patrícia Torme de Oliveira with Betânia de Assis Reis Matta. As a result,
we found that the struggle for recognition of the São Francisco do Bauana community as a
remnant of a quilombo is legitimate, even though residents are in the knowledge stage of the
process about what it means to belong and be a remnant of a quilombo. Nowadays, there is an
awareness that they need to seek to know more about their ancestors and the Afro-descendant
culture. It was also identified that currently everyone within the community is self-governing
as a quilombola and supports the struggle process, although before they were alien to their rights
and the benefits they can generate for the community. The survey results also show that today,
despite still strong prejudice, everyone declares themselves black and is proud of it, which
makes everyone include themselves in the struggle process.
