Resumo
This study investigates the social representations of the Amazonas state police regarding the
protection of human rights. First, it covers the concepts of the police and human rights, and
presents data regarding the advent of policing and its function, as well as the affirmation of
human rights. It also presents Brazilian policing models and recent changes, as well as a
summary of police history in the state of Amazonas. There is also an analysis of how police
officers are seen by the community and how they see themselves in this context. This study
can be characterized as qualitative research. For data collection, bibliographic and field
research were performed. Fifty police officers were interviewed, each of whom answered ten
open-ended and closed-ended questions. The study concludes with the researcher making
an analysis and an inference. After analyzing the data it is concluded, therefore, that the
Military Police have knowledge of their legal obligations, however there is a gap between
legislation and police practice and the protection of individual citizen's rights.
