Resumo

In general, suppliers of machining materials inform only an average of time of durability or life of the cutting tool, where it can be used in various types of materials that are according to its application. The material studied was the nodular cast iron, with 3.80% p C, and was analyzed due to its high machinability rate, good load resistance and flexibility and, are quite resistant to oils and greases. A manual lathe was used, with rotation equal to 900 rpm, 0.15 mm/rot advance and depth for each pass of 0.5 mm, where passes were analyzed without the application of the cutting fluid in a hard metal tool covered with CVD (chemical vapour deposition) . After the tests it was verified a wear and calculated tool life, according to Taylor. The total wear cut time was 22.2 minutes with a height of 1.4 mm. The wear found in the tool was the flank.
