Resumo

Increasingly the area of wastewater treatment has been developing aiming at the universalization of basic sanitation. One result of this development is the creation of MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) technology, a moving bed reactor that uses adherent biomass for wastewater treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of organic matter removal from a synthetic effluent by means of MBBR technology, operating with biomedia used in Manaus WWTPs and in the climatic conditions of the municipality. Thus, we sought to evaluate: the quality of the media; the efficiency of organic matter removal under environmental conditions in the city of Manaus; and, lastly, the ease of adaptation and optimization of activated sludge reactors using a moving bed. For this, a 40-day experiment was carried out in an activated sludge pilot scale reactor, with minor modifications to receive the support medium. The biological reactor was operated with an average OD of 3.4 mg / L, VOC of 1.85 Kg COD / m³.day and COS of 5.91 g COD / m².day, values obtained using an effluent with an average COD of 1027 mg / L and flow rate of 4.5 L / h. Also, the reactor was operated with a 41% filling fraction of the reactor, which corresponds to 24 L of medium support with 750m² / m³ of protected area. To decrease the start up time of the plant, biomedia with biofilm already formed was used. The reactor presented satisfactory removal of organic matter (COD), obtaining an average efficiency of 81.2%, reaching up to 87% during the experiment. Still, the treated effluent showed good aesthetic quality, with a reduction of turbidity of the raw synthetic effluent by 92.5%. Good biofilm formation was maintained in the biomedia for the time proposed for the experiment. Also, the average temperature in the aeration tank was 26.8 ° C, being in optimal conditions for biochemical reactions of biological degradation. The results proved the easy adaptation of the MBBR technology in existing activated sludge reactors, the good quality of the support medium used and the effective applicability of the system in the municipality.
