Resumo
To analyze the patient safety culture and its relationship with communication within the
nursing team in the surgical center of a large hospital in Northern Brazil. Method: A
cross-sectional, descriptive, and exploratory study conducted in the surgical center of a large
hospital in Northern Brazil, involving 71 nursing professionals. Data were collected using the
Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC), validated in Brazil. Four communication
dimensions and an open-ended question about adverse event reporting in the past year were
evaluated. Results: None of the communication dimensions achieved a sufficient percentage of
positive responses to be considered a strength in the patient safety culture. Weak communication
among team members and low reporting of adverse events were observed. Conclusion:
Communication in the surgical center presents weaknesses that, if not addressed, may compromise
patient safety. Strengthening communication is essential to improving the safety culture in the
surgical environment
