Resumo

To analyze the perception of type 2 diabetes mellitus in newly diagnosed patients in two Basic Health Units (UBS) in Manaus. Method: descriptive study, qualitative approach, carried out with 21 patients, through a semi-structured interview, in two units of the basic network affiliated with the Unified Health System (SUS), in the city of Manaus/AM, from August 2021 to August 2022. Bardin's content analysis method was used. The research was authorized by the Research Ethics Committee of the State University of Amazonas, with opinion number 4,865,828. Results: the average age was 55.7 years, ranging from 34 to 73 years, and three categories emerged from the data analysis, namely: Knowledge about DM; Guidelines and conditions regarding the diagnosis of DM; Perception about the diagnosis, personal, family, and adherence. Conclusion: it was noted that there was insufficient knowledge of patients about the disease, this factor can influence non-adherence to treatment, and it is up to health professionals, especially nurses, to provide patients and their families with correct and sufficient knowledge for effective self-care and control of DM, in addition to being attentive to individualized care, focusing on the real needs of patients after being diagnosed with type 2 DM, contributing to the control of DM and improving the quality of life of these patients.
