The creation of carbon credits based on the elaboration of the Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM) proved to be an important tool in combating the unbridled emission of polluting
gasses into the atmosphere, promoting the creation of sustainable responsibility and
corroborating cleaner production. However, the efficiency of the mechanism involving carbon
credits has proven to be ineffective due to the growing frauds that permeate their
commercialization, thus making the credibility of the tool fragile. Suspicious cases include
double counting of credits, where the same project is used to generate credits in different
markets, and the falsification of projects that do not exist or that have no real environmental
impact. The lack of transparency and proper regulation facilitates these frauds, harming both
investors and the environment. Rigorous investigations and audits are necessary to identify
and prevent these practices. The responsibility of regulatory bodies and the awareness of
stakeholders are fundamental to the integrity of this mechanism. Thus, the present study seeks
to identify how these frauds occur and why they exist, aiming to analyze the suspected cases
of fraud in the commercialization of carbon credits in Brazil through research in documents,
analysis of news content and reports.
