Alterações periodontais em adolescentes, adultos e idosos, com base nos inquéritos epidemiológicos: SB 2003, 2010 e 2023

Abstract

Periodontal diseases represent one of the main oral public health problems in Brazil, significantly affecting different age groups. This study aimed to analyze periodontal changes in Brazilian adolescents, adults and elderly based on data from the national epidemiological surveys SB Brasil conducted in 2003, 2010 and 2023. The methodology consisted of a documentary analysis of official data provided by the Ministry of Health, comparing periodontal indices (CPI and CAL) in the age groups 15-19 years, 35-44 years and 65-74 years. The results demonstrated a reduction in the prevalence of gingivitis in adolescents, but persistence of high rates of periodontitis in adults and elderly. Important regional inequalities were also observed, with the North and Northeast regions showing worse indicators. The analysis also revealed a negative impact of periodontal conditions on the quality of life of the examined individuals. It is concluded that, periodontal diseases continue to be a challenge for Brazilian public health, requiring preventive and therapeutic strategies aimed at each age group, with emphasis on reducing regional inequalities and strengthening the actions of the National Oral Health Policy.
