A estiagem de 2023 e os impactos socioambientais no municipio e Barreirinha (AM)

Abstract

The general objective of this study was to highlight the socio-environmental impacts caused by drought on the Amazon River in the municipality of Barreirinha. This was a case study, with field research from June to November 2023, in the municipality of Barreirinha, with a focus on the socio-environmental impacts resulting from the drought during this period. The results showed that the drought on the Amazon River caused a series of socio-environmental impacts in the municipality of Barreirinha, including the interruption of river transport, which is vital for the economy and mobility of the local population. The significant drop in river levels has limited access to basic services and commerce, raising the cost of living and triggering a crisis in the supply of food and other essential inputs. Environmentally, the reduction of aquatic biodiversity and the degradation of water quality have become emerging concerns, affecting not only fishing but also public health, given the higher incidence of water-related diseases. Therefore, the drought exacerbated the vulnerability of riverside communities, highlighting the need for effective natural resource management strategies and adaptation measures to climate change to guarantee the sustainability and well-being of affected populations.
