Resumo

Citizenship is presented in various forms, but it is through the perceptions of each individual that it reproduces itself. To exercise citizenship is to be aware of their rights and obligations, ensuring that they are put into practice; likewise, exercising citizenship is to be in full enjoyment of constitutional provisions. Given the political, economic and social context that we live in today, we propose the development of research whose theme 'Perception of students as to the importance of teaching geography for citizen education', as the objective of knowing to what extent geography teaching has been developed with students of the three high school of the Nilo Pereira State school, located in the Andirá Barreira District, municipality of Barreirinha and achieved with students a thought consistent with what it is to be a citizen. Following the assumptions of qualitative research, as a work methodology, we opted for a phenomenological approach, necessary to understand in greater depth the students' thinking on this subject. The results point to a superficial understanding of what citizenship is and how it materializes in their day-to-day life, but recognize that from education in general and geography teaching in particular, it is possible to develop a more critical thought about the lived reality, as well as point ways to a personal and professional achievement.
