Resumo

Population aging is a reality that highlights the need for restructuring health services and formulating public policies that guarantee quality of life for the elderly. This approach is of great importance in the field of public health, as it deals with a frequent problem affecting our population: violence against the elderly. Therefore, this research aims to understand adolescents' ideas about the phenomenon of aging, general aspects of gerontology, emphasizing issues of violence from a gerontological perspective. The methodology was characterized by a study adopting a mixed-methods approach of a sequential descriptive/explanatory nature, combining elements of action research and using bibliographic elements to build a theoretical foundation for students aged 16 and older in the state education system. The results showed that understanding what violence is helps young people recognize abusive behaviors and the importance of respect and dignity in their relationships with older people. It is important to avoid normalizing violence against the elderly, since educational prevention mechanisms can be directed towards this end, particularly among young people. This reinforces the need for the involvement of various professionals, including teachers, in prevention efforts, thus enabling them to prevent and provide a better quality of life and longevity for older people.
