A contribuição da igreja católica apostólica romana na formação do município de Ipixuna Amazonas

Abstract

This study analyzed the role of the Roman Catholic Church in the initial formation of the municipality of Ipixuna, Amazonas, highlighting its social, cultural, and educational impact. The objective was to investigate how missionary practices, such as the "desobrigas" (a religious service), influenced local identity and social cohesion, as well as to evaluate the Church's role in social infrastructure. The research used qualitative methods, including interviews with residents and analysis of historical documents. The "desobrigas" were annual religious events that united the community in celebrations and social actions, promoting solidarity and cultural identity. The arrival of Father Agostinho in 1961 marked a new stage, with the Church assuming educational and social functions, especially in the absence of state support. The results show that the Church was a pillar in the initial development of Ipixuna, promoting not only faith but also education and basic services. It concludes that the Church played a fundamental role in the consolidation of Ipixuna, standing out as a social agent during a critical period. Continuous dialogue between religious institutions and public policies is recommended to foster sustainable development.
