Abstract

The research project Echoes of the Periphery: Voices Narrating the History of the Valparaíso Community* investigates the formation, collective memory, and identity of the residents of this peripheral area in Manaus. The study employs oral history as its primary methodology—combined with perspectives from sociology and urban anthropology—to understand how individuals construct and transmit their narratives regarding the community's processes of occupation, resistance, and consolidation. Grounded in the analysis of life stories, historical documents, and participant observation, the study seeks to highlight the bonds of belonging, sociocultural dynamics, and challenges faced by the local population over time. Beyond documenting these lived experiences, the research reflects on public policies, urban segregation, and the agency of residents in transforming the peripheral landscape. By centering the voices of the periphery, the study contributes to valuing local history and enriching the debate on identity, territory, and memory in the contemporary city.
