Abstract

This study analyzes family farming as the main source of income and livelihood for riverside families in the Repartimento do Limão area of Barreirinha, located in the Paraná do Limão region, Amazonas state. The research seeks to understand how agricultural practices developed in the region are influenced by the flood and ebb cycles of the rivers, natural elements that structure the productive dynamics of the Amazonian floodplain. To this end, bibliographic data, institutional documents from IBGE and IDAM, as well as questionnaires and interviews with local farmers were used. The results show that family farming plays a fundamental role in the economic, social, and cultural maintenance of the community, representing not only a form of food production but also a way of life marked by the transmission of traditional knowledge between generations. The significant participation of women in the organization and processing of production was also observed, especially in the processing of cassava, a central activity for family income. The analysis, however, demonstrates challenges faced by families, such as the devaluation of their produce, unpredictable weather, and the disinterest of younger generations in remaining in rural areas. Thus, family farming in the region continues to be essential for local sustainability, although it depends on public policies, economic valuation, and community-building initiatives to guarantee its continuity and preservation.
