Resumo
This article addresses the importance of teaching indigenous language and culture in Brazilian schools, especially in Tabatinga, Amazonas. The research highlights the lack of teaching materials and the difficulty teachers face in addressing indigenous themes. Through questionnaires administered to Portuguese language teachers, a lack of adequate teaching resources and specific training for teachers on indigenous culture was identified. Although legislation mandates the inclusion of this theme in the curriculum (Law No. 11.645/2008), its implementation has been found to be unsatisfactory. The research seeks to identify how indigenous language and culture are being addressed in schools and to present ways to include this traditional knowledge in Portuguese language classes. The article suggests the inclusion of local authors, lectures, and teaching materials to enrich teaching and combat prejudice, promoting a more effective appreciation of indigenous culture in the region, as well as cultural diversity within the school environment.
