Resumo

The family is the basis for an athlete's sports development. Parental actions can positively or negatively influence the sports progress and also the social and academic scope of young people. In this sense, it is believed that the study of parental support and its influence on the initiation of adolescents in basketball can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the subject and contribute to a better dynamic between parents and young athletes. Objective: To investigate parental support and sports practice in basketball among adolescents from Manaus/AM. Materials and Method: Descriptive study with a quantitative-qualitative and cross-sectional approach. The research included 45 adolescents, aged between 12 and 17 years, male, participants in the sports training project at the Amazon Basketball Club. To assess parental support, the Questionnaire Contribution of School and Family in Adolescent Sports Training (CEFFEA) was used, more specifically the dimension focused on family contribution to sports practice. In addition to the questionnaire, records on parental support styles occurred through participant observation throughout basketball training. The statistical package SPSS version 22.0 and the Friedman and Mann-Whitney U tests (p<0.05) were used to analyze the quantitative data. The analysis of the participant observation was performed using the content analysis technique. Results: The results showed that adolescents from Manaus-AM perceive the contributions of parental support more significantly in the financial and motivational aspects (p<0.05), with less emphasis on the aspect of sports monitoring. The research also showed that no difference was observed in the perception of adolescents according to the variables age group and time of experience (p>0.05). However, field observations indicated greater emotional support and presence during training by parents of beginners' groups, while in the more advanced groups, a lack of parental involvement and greater pressure for performance was identified. Conclusion: Adolescents from Manaus-AM perceive parental support for playing basketball mainly in financial and motivational aspects and the variables age group and time of experience did not indicate significant differences in relation to the adolescents' perception of the parental support they receive
