Resumo
To perform an oral swab test on cancer patients in order to conduct a microbiological analysis on the results of the collections, seeking to characterize the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria not identified at the time of admission of hospitalized patients, in addition to comparing such results with the findings of the collection of other parts of the body, in order to investigate the hypothesis about its effectiveness in the early diagnosis of infections in the hospital setting. Methodology: Saliva and secretion samples from the mouth were collected by means of an oral swab and sent to a laboratory at the FCECON institution where detailed analyses of the material were performed by means of culture, enabling the analysis between the correlation of the research findings and the systemic condition of the same. Results: Of the 144 patients who underwent the oral swab test, 59% (85 patients) showed no growth of pathogenic bacteria, while 41% (59 patients) showed a variability of 07 pathogens of different genera. Discussion: Thus, considering the prevalence data collected by this study, it is possible to infer that the results of this research showed that the oral swab is a test capable of detecting bacteria of great importance to the hospital routine, in addition to indicating how vital the use of multiple culture tests (including the oral swab) is in preventive diagnostic protocols in the ICU, since secretions and fluids from different parts of the body can cause different problems to patients, and their early detection can result in effective treatments for hospitalized patients. Conclusion: The results regarding the prevalence and comparison between the pathogens of the oral swab5 with those present in the nasal, rectal, inguinal and tracheal swabs collected by the research indicated the need to develop protocols in the ICU that prioritize the performance of culture tests of diverse samples, since different pathogens can be present simultaneously in the same patient.
