Abstract

This dissertation explores the role of fan groups in the Folkloric Festival of Parintins, going beyond their participation as mere spectators in an artistic spectacle to exemplify a process of legitimization and formation of the cultural identity of the people of Parintins. The act of being a fan permeates the daily life of the inhabitants of Parintins, in a society where the boi-bumbá (folkloric bull) is present in all social, historical, political, artistic, educational, and economic aspects. The study aims to describe and analyze the protagonism of the fan groups in the Folkloric Festival of Parintins through the figure of the fan, the main social agent in this process. By examining how the boi-bumbá is embedded in history, beliefs, education, language,arts, and daily life, the research reveals that the daily life of the people of Parintins within the boi-bumbá culture is motivated by a unique characteristic: the power to influence the outcome of the competition. This qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive research draws on the works of Geertz (1973) and Chizzotti (2006) for analysis, shedding light on the cultural significance and social dynamics of the festival.
