Resumo
The fight for sustainability is a cause that is increasingly necessary to be embraced by society nowadays, as it is well know that planet Earth continues to suffer from the overload of environmental problems caused, mainly, by humanity itself. The theme of the present work was born precisely as a way of giving visibility to this cause, since it adheres as its object of study a degraded natural place that has unique characteristics within the city of Manaus, that is, with the presence of a beautiful waterfall with 16 meters in the middle of the urban area, perceived as tourist potential for the city. This place is the Alta do Tarumã waterfall, an ecosystem fragment that is part of an Environmental Protection Area (APA), but which is not in good preservation conditions. In this way, the general objective was to investigate how pollution and socio-environmental impacts affect its potential. To fulfill this objective, the research was developed as exploratory, with a qualitative-quantitative approach, with bibliographic and documental searches on the subject, and based on the inductive method. In the practice of the research’s methodological course, three data collection techniques were used: observation of the object of study, two interviews and two applied questionnaires. As for the results obtained, it was found that the current impacts present in the place, despite threatening, do not erase its potential to develop as a tourist attraction, as there are different ways to recover the quality of its environmental resources and, in addition, there was already a project conceived by the Manaus City Hall to transform the place into a park, which would fit in as a tourist attraction for the city.
