This article shows the use of the alternation of the verb está/estar in the speech and textual production of students in the 7th year of Elementary School. For this study, a bibliographical research was first carried out in the area of Linguistics and Mother Language Teaching in which the explanation became plausible for the alternation of these words both in speech and in writing. With regard to the composition of the corpus, an oral test was applied to the students and then they were asked to produce a short text about someone they were most anxious about. This genre was chosen because it allows for greater resourcefulness and less formality, allowing for a vast capture of segments to be analyzed. The main conclusion of this work is that there really is an alternation between the words esta/estar in the students' speech and production. Silva (2013, p. 62) says that this issue is explained by the influence of unmonitored orality the omission of r's in infinitives (estudá, falá, está, etc.) which has been a motivation for this alternation. In view of this, discussions arise about how to work with the mother tongue and linguistic diversity in the classroom, according to ALMEIDA (2020); SILVA (2013); BAGNO (2013); thus seeking to reflect on linguistic prejudice and what means to help the teacher in raising students' awareness by making them have contact with the most diverse genres and their linguistic functions so that they can make use of them as necessary and their participation in society itself, Silva (2013, p. 196).
